A limited programme of archaeological fieldwork, which determines the presence or absence of archaeology in a specified area. This usually takes the form of the excavation of a percentage of the site or a geophysical or topographical survey. The results will establish if there are archaeological remains on site, and if there is any need for any further archaeological investigation.
