Description
-
- Gravel layer - silty and dirty, overlying brikearth and black silty deposit. seems to dirty to be gravel surface: also doesn't contain enough gravel and what it does contain is neither compact enough nor has the sorted quality which exposed surfaces usually have. It therefore seems likely that this deposit is a dump, laid down in Roman period, arising from gravel extraction and perhaps relating to 'reinstatement' of this site for subsequent use as graveyard.
