Description

- This appears to be the backfill around the brick lining. It is composed of a variety of materials, and was possibly just packed in around the bricks, in between them and the cut, using whatever was to hand , as the Masonry structure was being erected. This would explain the variety of materials, including clay, gravel and sand. Some of what looks like fill in between the bricks and the natural could actually be the fill of much earlier pits, perhaps Roman ones.
