Description

    • Whereas 542 looked more like deliberate backfill, 543 seemed more like what you'd expect of a silted-up fill, it being a lot more homogenous in character, and also differed in that it didn't contain any obviously "modern" finds or at least the sort of stuff we were getting out of 542. It was lumpy in places though, and even bits of 554 clay were floating about here and there (albeit very occasionally). If it has been backfilled, it may represent an earlier back-filling phase that 542? Further down, near the lower part of the fill, it got more mixey, with lumps of stoney / gravelly material. Most probably some of it is backfill.
