Description

    • CLAY - Solid, lumpy clay that has obviously been dumped into the pit, present only on eastern side and centre of cut, it surrounded one half of a "beam" of wood which had obviously been thrown in with the clay (the fact that the clay was so packed around one end of the piece of wood may suggest the wood was associated with the clay prior to it being dumped into the pit ?). Lumps of this clay were found - not uncommonly - within (542) very occasionally, a small lump of it occured mixed within the upper level of (543) as well. The piece of wood was broken at one end, the other end was fashioned into some sort of joint (looks like a tenon). It measured 1.19m long, 0.12m wide and 0.10m thick. Its length includes the tenon. The tenon itself was 80mm long, 60mm wide and 2.5mm thick. There was a small notch (25mm x 10mm) on the tenon.
