Basic Information

  • Refuse pitting

Sub Groups

  • Sub Group: PCO06_568
    • Cut and two fills of pit
  • Sub Group: PCO06_573
    • Cut and fill of heavily truncated
  • Sub Group: PCO06_593
    • Cut and fill of pit

Group Description

    • These pits functioned as probable refuse pits, as indicated by the mixed nature of their fills and the abraded appearance of the inclusions. The pottery was so abraded that diagnostic sherds were recovered from only subgroup 568.

Dating Information

    • No dating material was recovered from the fills of subgroups 573 and 593, but given their stratigraphic positions they are seen as early Roman. The fills of subgroup 568 did produce datable material. From its contexts, seven pot sherds were recovered from (1899), all of which were dated to 250-400AD, and one sherd was recovered from (1900), which was broadly dated to 50-400AD. While this indicates a late date, the relative stratigraphic position shows the feature to be early Roman. This pit has been truncated by a number of other features in the area, all of which have early-mid Roman dates. Therefore the late datable sherds are considered to be intrusive, possibly resulting from the heavy truncation.
