  • Sub Group: PCO06_272
    • Back-fill deposits in quarry pit [1064].
  • Sub Group: PCO06_693
    • Latest leveling deposits on the top of a series of quarry pit fills

Group Description

    • This group is composed of a series backfill deposits in a quarry pit [1015]=[1064]. Post Medieval cuts [928] and [972] were dug into (911), a dumped deposit which overlay deposit (931), which in turn overlay water lain deposit (935), which overlay dumped deposit (943) and (946). These layers formed sub-group 693. The earlier backfilling event consisted of, from latest to earliest, (1009), (1010), (1011), (1012), (1013), and (1014); these contexts formed sub-group 272, and this further secondary back filling event overlay sub-group 271, the first deliberate back filling event. This consisted of latest fill (1060), (1061), (1062), which overlay primary fill (1063), recorded in group xx. These gravel fills were noted to slope down from south to north.

Dating Information

    • The datable finds from sub-group 272 were given a range of dates. The majority were dated to 1500-1600AD, and eight of which were dated to 1400-1500AD. These latter pot sherds are seen as residual. Two were dated to 1270-1400AD, again these sherds are seen as residual. The datable finds from sub-group 271 consisted of Roman pottery dating to 50-300AD, and no other datable material was recovered from the deposits. However, given that these fills overlay primary fill (1063) which has been dated to 1480-1550AD, it clear that the Roman pot is residual, and that the deposits from which it came were dug from the vicinity of the site in order to back fill the quarry pit.
