  • Truncated refuse pit cut

Sub Groups

  • Sub Group: PCO06_242
    • Cut of Roman refuse pit

Group Description

    • Roman pit [1215] was dug into (1235), the back fill of broad shallow irregular Roman quarry pit [1236], that was in turn dug into (1264). The nature of the pit being broad and shallow indicates that it was a quarry pit dug to access the gravels, and was carried out on a low scale rather than industrial scale compared to other quarry pits on the site. The pit is unlikely to have been dug for the mixed deposit that formed the fill, given that the sides were eroded indicating that it had been open for some time before it was back filled.
