Subgroup Narrative Text

    • Context (814), a deposit of dumped material or capping layer over quarry pits overlay (842), the fill of Post-Med cesspit [843]. Composition and colour of fill suggests that cess formed a major component of original fill perhaps with lenses of sandy gravel being dumped to cover and bury each episode of deposition and guard against subsidence. Cut [843] was dug into (885), the latest surviving fill of pit [890].

Dating Narrative

    • Of the 12 pot sherds recovered from fill (842), 11 were dated to 1580-1600AD and one was dated to 1400-1500AD; this earlier pot sherd is seen as residual.
