- Roman Quarry Pit
Subgroup Narrative Text
-
- This pit cut was revealed gradually over the course of the excavation. This was due to its size. To say this was a quarry it is something of a misnomer; it was more of a quarry face rather than a quarry pit. It was very big in size, measuring 30metres east to west and 19 metres north to south. It had a varying depth, the deepest point being 2.5m. It was back filled by a series of events and had been subjected to a series of heavy truncations.

- Due to the size of this feature, and the understanding of its function where it was back filled in a piecemeal manner, there is no one fill associated with the base of the pit. However, given its stratigraphic position it is a quarry face that resulted from early Roman activity. It would have resulted from quarrying on an industrial scale, and the timing coincided with the establishment of Roman London. This was one of the earliest features on the site.
