- Large quarry pit cut
Group Description
-
- Context [102] from the evaluation and [639] from the open area excavation formed a large early Post Medieval quarry pit. The cut measured 12 metres by 7 metres and had a depth of c.2m. Given its size it is seen as having been quarried on an industrial scale. It was dug into the secondary fills of earlier pits that had been cut in the Early Post Medieval period.

Dating Information
-
- This large quarry pit was dug for the gravels of the site area. Therefore the fills are not seen as part of this subgroup as the pit was not dug to take them, they formed part of a later back filling process. However, the earliest back fill, (642), produced 54 pot sherds. Of these, 45 were dated to 1480-1550AD, the remainder were dated to 1400-1500AD, and these latter finds are seen as residual.
