Group Description

- Underlying the modern overburden was a series of related drainage features. Context (611) formed the only fill of soak-away {612}, the bricks of which had become brittle from post depositional processes. It was built into construction cut [614], and was the same soakaway as {113} recorded in the evaluation. Associated with late Post Medieval drainage feature, sub-group 191, recorded in the evaluation. Context (586) formed the upper fill of soak-away {584}, and the earlier fills were (587), and (588). The soak-away was built into construction cut [585], which was dug into (590), the fill of (589). Context (586) was a capping layer on top of the soakaway after its abandonment, and is recorded as subgroup (208). Underlying the modern overburden, (595) was the fill of soak-away {596}, built into construction cut [598]. Fill (595) occasional held oyster shell, moderate amounts of small angular and sub-angular stones, and moderate amounts of broken brick and CBM. This was a fairly mixed fill and formed the only deposit within the soakaway. This soakaway truncated boundary marker [572]. This group also contains (590), the fill of [589], a probable construction cut for a soak-away, that held no masonry, indicating that the structure was never built.

Dating Information

- The fill of this feature, (611), produced one pot sherd, dated to 1580-1900AD. The brick was unfrogged, indicating a Georgian period of construction. No datable material was recovered from the other features in this group, but given thier form and function, construction from unfrogged brick, and stratigraphic position, they are clearly late Post Medieval.
