Group Description

    • Context (945), a layer, overlay (941), the latest fill of [942], which was filled by (944) and primary fill (947). The later fills were seen as latter back fill events, and primary fill (947) was seen as an inwash deposit that resulted from the excavation of these pits. The cut itself was probably a series of smaller cuts dug out to access the gravels of the site area. The recorded cut [942] was dug into (952), the latest fill of [950], and primary fill (951). Cut [942] was dug into (1237), the fill of Roman pit [1238], perhaps dug to dispose of pyre debris as indicated by the moderate amounts of charcoal found within the fill. The pit was dug into the (660)=(852), one of the latest back fills of quarry pit/face recorded in subgroup 209.
