An organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyse, and display all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS is used for a variety of purposes besides archaeology, including town planning, meteorology and cartography. At the Prescot Street dig, GIS is being used to create a computer based master map of all the archaeological features on the site.
