Residual finds usually occur due to the cutting of older stratigraphic contexts during the preparation of other contexts – a pit for example. The backfill of this pit will redeposit artefacts from lower stratigraphic sequences (and therefore older deposits) higher up the stratigraphic sequence. These artefacts found out of their stratigraphic sequence are referred to as residual finds.
