Scheduled Ancient Monument. Scheduling is the process by which important archaeological sites and monuments are given legal protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, by being place on a list of sites worthy of such protection by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. Scheduled Monument Consent is required from the Secretary of State before any works can take place on these sites.
