My first week with L – P saw me in at the deep end, having been asked to excavate a horn lined soak-away Context: 1098, one of a number found so far on the site. This was the first one I had ever encountered. A fascinating structure, formed from interwoven horn cores to line a soak-away, it looked like an elaborate piece of set from a science fiction movie.
I wasn’t alone in excavating this feature so I was helped by Paula and Iancu; and to Iancu I owe many beers for being very gallant, doing most of the shovelling for me as the pit got deeper and the barrow further from my reach!
