In stratigraphy a cut is a context that has been created by the removal of material it can also be called a negative context. For example when someone in the past made a pit, the event of digging out the soil creates the cut of the pit. This negative can then be backfilled with another deposit. Cuts may be features such as a ditch, grave, post hole or pit (see also Truncation)
